TBB’s Top 10 Reviews of the year [Feature]

It’s that time when everyone – including us at the Brothers Brick – is doing a Year in Review. We’ve already done that to an extent: shortlists for our Creation of the Year and Builder of the Year awards, plus the 10 most popular creations to feature on our website. But what about our Year in Reviews, plural? Hundreds of LEGO sets were released this year, and our critical eye passed over 89 of them. Inevitably, some were more popular than others, both with our reviewing team and you, the readers! We’ve crunched the numbers, and these were our 10 most popular review articles from 2024. And if you missed any, check out our complete reviews archive for this year and beyond!

10. LEGO Star Wars 75394 Imperial Star Destroyer

Star Wars has been an ever-present in LEGO’s line-up for 25 years now, so it’s no surprise to see a set from that theme make our top 10! In this instance, it’s the summer’s flagship playset that proved popular with readers. It’s packed full of play features, and includes a unique celebratory Cal Kestis minifigure. Read Managing Editor Kyle’s review to see if they made it worth the price of admission!

9. LEGO Star Wars 75382 TIE Interceptor

It’s a double-bill of Star Wars at the start of our list, as 75382 TIE Interceptor comes in at number 9. The Interceptor was one of the first in LEGO’s Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) sub-theme, so it’s appropriate that this year’s May 4th UCS revisits the ship for LEGO Star Wars’ quarter-century. It’s certainly an upgrade over the original, but to see to what extent, you’ll want to read Theo’s review.

8. LEGO Icons 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter

A big inspiration for Star Wars was the Dune novels, which saw part 2 of its movie adaptation released this year. (Wait, that was this year?! Where does the time go…) In conjunction with said movie release, the iconic Atreides Royal Ornithopter was rendered in LEGO. Our review was done by resident Dune fan Daniel. Or should that be.. Dune-iel? Anyone? No? OK, never mind. Sorry for that cheap gag Daniel – anyway, be sure to go and read his excellent review!

7. LEGO Batman 76271 Gotham City

Daniel was also on hand to travel to Gotham City to check out one of the biggest LEGO sets of the year. 76271 Gotham City celebrates the Batman animated series in a whopping 4,000-piece low-relief build of the caped crusader’s home city. Combining elements of the LEGO Art and Architecture lines with a much-loved DC franchise is a bold move – the review will tell us whether it paid off!

6. LEGO Technic 42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81

So far, everything on our list has had some kind of non-LEGO IP associated with it. So it’s refreshing to see that an entirely in-house initiative made for our sixth most popular review of 2024! Many LEGO sets across a variety of themes were space-themed this year, and that includes a handful of Technic sets released in March. Reviews Editor Bre is our Technic expert, and she looked at the entire wave, including this VTOL spacecraft. No spoilers for the full review, but I will say that after reading it, I did go and buy a copy of this set myself!

5. LEGO Technic 42179 Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit

The first set in the top 5 formed part of that same wave of Technic sets – but it couldn’t be more different to the spacecraft. A long-awaited orrery really leans into the functionality that makes Technic sets so popular. Give Bre’s review a spin if you haven’t already!

4. LEGO Icons 10332 Medieval Town Square

This list isn’t necessarily the 10 best sets of the year, of course – it’s just a popularity contest. So we can’t say for certain which set is the GOAT this year. But speaking of goats, that was one of the most exciting elements of 10332 Medieval Town Square! DevOps Engineer Chuck rolled his sleeves up and got stuck in to this middle-aged Icons set.

3. LEGO Technic 42171 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance

We’re into the podium places now – and appropriately enough, it’s a Formula 1 car that takes third spot! This is actually the second large-scale Technic F1 car that Bre has cast her expert eye over, the first being 42141 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car. Is the Mercedes an upgrade over the McLaren, and is it worth it in its own right? Check out the review to see the result at the chequered flag!

2. 71047 LEGO Minifigures – Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons and Dragons made the leap from tabletop game to LEGO theme this year, and part of that was an entire series of the popular Collectible Minifigures. Senior Editor Chris took a seat at the table to meet the 12 members of this dungeon party. Barbarians, Warlocks, Paladins; Dwarves, Dragonborn and Elves… Pick out your crew from Chris’ review!

1. LEGO Ideas 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale

Of course, the set that kicked off LEGO’s D&D theme was LEGO Ideas 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale. And it rolled a natural 20 to end up as our most popular review of 2024! It’s certainly an eye-catching set, even for the un-initiated like yours truly. And for those of you who are also D&D fans, be sure to give Kyle’s review a read; as our resident Dungeon Master, he found plenty to enjoy for fans of the franchise!

That concludes our list for the 10 most popular reviews of 2024! Thank you, dear reader, for taking the time to read them, and for your comments – we always appreciate interacting with our readers. Look out for plenty more reviews in 2025!
