Last year LEGO released a minifigure I never would have expected in a thousand years – a mindflayer paired with an intellect devourer. Dungeons and Dragons turned out to be the perfect license to deliver fantasy and medieval accessories to an underserved audience. While it’s uncertain if LEGO will release any other D&D sets in the future, the creative minifig building community isn’t slowing down in rolling up new charcters. Let’s have a look at some recent highlights!
What started as a group of friends and actors livestreaming their D&D campaigns became a media empire for Critical Role, culminating in the animated series The Legend of Vox Machina. Fantasy minifig artisan Thorgrihm pays tribute to the show with his take on the cast.
ASortaOkayBuilder was also inspired by D&D in other media and made a minifig tribute to the Not Another D&D Podcast. This Steel Hawk Fighter is called Zudrick of the Murder and is equipped with an oversized anime sword for over-the-top stabbing.
Polish builderSobek Bricks also specializes in fantasy. For a recent series, the builder explores the far reaches of D&D lore with this pair of characters from the Spelljammer setting. Vrrishek Krallith is a rastipede is a war-hardened survivor from the Glythflow system. Gloob of Sargasso Depths is a ranger who can track astral fish through the plasma tides.
haon.brx shares a human artificerand alchemist who engineered mechanical arms to handle his volatile potions, like a high-fantasy Doc Ock.
Jacob Manahan saw haon’s artificer and decided to riff on it, creating a sister for the previous charater. This medieval mechanic even created an adorable automaton to help in the lab.
k.c.legos doesn’t just assemble cool figs. They’re also an ace photographer, taking characters out into the wild for amazing location shoots. Here we see Tristan the ranger navigating a stream on horseback. I love the shallow focus and how the shot captures the surface tension of the water around the horse’s muzzle.
Timothy Skorka shares a demonic warlock with a fluffy mount. Excellent staging as the villain sucks a soul from a poor lion knight. The staging with the floating rock and red terrain is inspired by Hellfire Peninsula in World of Warcraft.
johnzeyen and syntheticbugfigs collaborated on a tribute to the classic ’80s Dungeons and Dragons cartoon. For this flesh-tone take on the characters, John incorporates a few third party skirts and shawls. syntheticbugfigs sticks to official parts and yellow figs for a retro look. I like the technique for adding a unicorn horn to the skeletal horse.
That’s all for this week’s Minifig Monday. Let us know in the comments what themes or builders you’d like to see us cover in a future column.
