The plot of Jurassic World: Rebirth hinges on tracking down genetic samples from the biggest dinosaurs deemed too dangerous for the original Jurassic Park. It also introduces the Aquilops, a plant-eating ceratopsian roughly the size of a housecat. And it’s a baby! Alongside the line of action playsets, LEGO will help you build your own baby Aquilops from 339 pieces. Available on June 1 for US $27.99 | CAN $29.99 | UK £19.99, 76970 Baby Dinosaur Dolores: Aquilops is the most affordable set in the latest Jurassic collection. It follows in the tiny dino footsteps of Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaur, a set we found to be a true delight for a great price. How does Dolores measure up as a buildable baby dino friend?

The box and contents
The front of the box shows Dolores standing on her back legs with her tiny arms ready to accept a snack or offer a hug. Flipping the box around we see her on all fours while insets indicate the model’s points of articulation. Inside the box are three paper bags and one instruction book.
The build
The first steps will have you building a leafy snack for little Dolores. Wouldn’t want our new Dino to show up with nothing to eat, right? Next we move on to the body, rather slim at 4 studs wide at the top and 2 studs wide at the belly. There are connection points for the limbs, head and tail, the latter of which is also included in bag 1 and swings via matching hinge plates with articulated joint.
In bag 2 we assemble the Dolores limbs. The load-bearing rear legs use stronger Technic rotation joints, while the smaller forelimbs use ball joints and hinges. The brick yellow base is accented by dark red and nougat markings. The palms of the hands have an exposed stud that can be used to connect a leaf or berry snack.
Last but not least, it’s time to put together Dolores’ head! The printed eyes are angled slightly foreward, the better to meet your gaze and melt your heart. She sports a small ceratopsian frill and little spikes. Her mouth opens and closes for nomming leaves or tiny fingers.
The finished model
Dolores is perhaps the first ever life-size dinosaur model from LEGO. With her oversized eyes, head, and feet, she is definitely a cutie. The earthy color palette keeps with the more grounded designs in the Rebirth film, which seems to be eschewing feathers and bright colors for this outing.
With 13 points of articulation, Dolores is a highly poseable brick-built friend who can be positioned equally well on 2 legs or 4. Those joints are quite visible, though, esspecially in the forelimbs, where the grey stands out against the mix of earthy colors.
Conclusions and recommendation
As the third brick-built baby dino from LEGO, this li’l Aquilops isn’t breaking new ground, but she does hold her own. Dolores biggest asset over Baby Bumpy and Little Eatie is the articulation. She’s very poseable and expressive. That’s also the biggest drawback, as the ball joints and thin limbs compromise the cuteness factor. The model reminds me of the smaller Creator 3-in-1 models in that regard. It makes we wish LEGO would release its common joints in more colors than grey and black, especially as brick-built animals become more common.
While this set faced a small price increase in the US, like the rest of the Rebirth sets, it’s still a good value. Like the Creator 3-in-1 sets, it’s a great stand-alone set that is equally appealing for kids and adults who like cute models to pose and display.
