As much as I am a proud train nerd, I must confess that American trains are a bit of a blind spot for me. Thank goodness, then, for LEGO trainheads like Matt Csenge! Matt has built a fine model of a – *checks notes* – Erie Lackawanna Railroad SD45. It’s in a striking red, white and blue livery that apparently outlasted the EL Railroad itself, which shuttered in 1975. See, this is the kind of interesting information that a train anorak loves!
But even non-train LEGO fans will appreciate the craftsmanship at play here. Every angle of the loco’s chassis has been captured, and the details are great – from the flex tube handrails to the bogies. And there’s a surprising amount of NPU, too. The horns are skeleton legs, minifigure hands are used aplenty for small pipes, and the radiator fans use Speed Champions wheel rims and steam train wheels. Very meta!
